Symmetry, Stability, and Soul
Translating microscopic aviation precision into clean, majestic geometric forms, Carmel's grand, multi-tiered candelabras have been bringing grounding stability and a regal presence to the table for four decades.
Following my previous post and the wonderful response from collectors and admirers of my father's art, I wanted to dedicate this follow-up to one of his most captivating and powerful creations: the candelabra.
In Jewish tradition, light symbolizes creation, wisdom, and spirituality—nowhere more so than the Shabbat candles, which bring peace and warmth into the home. To hold a light of such profound significance requires a vessel that offers not just beauty, but a presence of absolute grace, strength, and majesty.
This is where the distinction between a classic pair of candlesticks and a grand candelabra reveals itself. While a pair of candlesticks offers delicate, separate points of light, a candelabra bestows an air of regal splendor, instantly becoming the centerpiece of the Shabbat table. It gathers separate branches and unites them into a single, commanding base. This architectural transition demands flawless balance and absolute stability to securely cradle a multitude of candles, at times beautifully arranged across two tiers.
In my father's brand, Carmel Shabi, this elevation of the Shabbat table found its perfect aesthetic expression. Coming from the aviation industry, where microscopic precision and meticulous detail are paramount, he brought a rare discipline to his workshop. He possessed the unique ability to take solid, substantive materials and sculpt them into clean, noble, and harmonious geometric forms.
His candelabras, sweeping up to two tiers, feature a multi-faceted geometric body designed in perfect symmetry with the number of branches, ranging from 4 to 12. Yet beneath this meticulous craftsmanship lies an intimate sentiment: the number of branches was never chosen at random. Each piece was custom-commissioned to match the exact number of individuals in the family. Every soul has its dedicated branch, seamlessly integrated into one luminous, enduring monument.
I invite you to swipe through the gallery to see these candelabras in their varying forms. Notice the seamless geometric transitions, the grounding stability of the base, and above all, the quiet power of a vessel crafted to hold the most sacred light of the week.
